What are the main waste treatment processes?
- Incineration: Burning waste to reduce its volume and generate energy. This process takes place in specific structures such as furnaces. There are 3 main types of incineration furnaces
- Horizontal single-chamber furnaces with fixed or multiple hearths, grate furnaces or rotary furnaces.
- Single-chamber vertical furnaces.
- Vertical multi-chamber furnaces.
- Pyrolysis: High-temperature decomposition of organic waste in the absence of oxygen, producing combustible gases and solid residues.

How does the waste incineration process work?

Incinerators reduce the volume of household waste from 1 m³ to 0.1 m³, and the weight from 1 tonne to 300 kg. What’s more, one tonne of waste can generate 2 to 2.5 tonnes of steam, depending on its lower calorific value (LCV), which contributes to energy recovery. Bottom ash from incineration can be used as road base, providing additional product recovery.
